Elephant looking £3,500 to insure FD2!!!! HELP...

Well ive left a deposit with lowrider off the site to buy his FD2 and have the money ready to buy the car. The only obstacle in my way is obtaining insurance.

Tried a few of the obvious companies such as sky, a-plan but they do not cover drivers in Northern Ireland.

So i tried elephant and although at first they only recognised the car as a 3 door civic type r, when i had made sure they knew i wished to insure the fd2 i.e. 4 door, import, type r, the guy came back and said the best they could offer was £3,500.

Now ive had alot of high powered cars in the past such as an evo 9, a dc5 integra and most recently a mkv r32, and ive never paid anywhere near as much as that, which frankly i feel is a ridiculous amount.

So i dont know what to do, bite the bullet and pay this extortionate rate, phone back to elephant and try to renegotiate a better price (which i doubt) or try and find another company, but this in itself may prove difficult as many specialists dont cover Northern Ireland.

So could anyone give me some advice, im really really keen to pick up the fd2 asap, just need to get the insurance sorted first.

PS Im 23, with 3 years no claims and ive held my licence since November 2005.

First of all try Chris Knott from here maybe he can help...Otherwise give a call to a few importers and they can advise you hopefully.

Finally you have a pm!

I thought elephant would be prity good. Im with them and its costing me £580 to renew for next year. Im 28, 10 years no claims.

They have the option for 2007 onwards civic, 4 door import type r on there website. Have you tried that ?. They may be trying it on a bit over the phone. They do it every year come renewal time with me. Send me a price by letter and I better it by atleast £150 through there website.

Yeah mate i tried the elephant website, but no luck, it come up exactly the same; £3500, like what the flip!!!

Its so bloody frustating, as everything is in place for me to buy the car this week, its just insurance is holding me back. And its not as if i havent got insured on a jap import before...i got insured on a honda dc5 when i was 21 and believe me it wasnt anywhere near as the quote im getting from elephant.

I just dont like the thought of paying that sort of money to elephant as i know for a fact their ripping me clean off! So annoying, just going to ring every insurance company tomorrow and see how i get on!

Good call on phoning the jap importers mate. They might be able to point me in the direction of insurers who will 1) give me a quote in the first place, and 2) not rip the entire arse out of me like elephant are trying to do!

If anyone else has any advice please let me know, or indeed any other insurers they can recommend!!

Thanks again everyone

Try SWINTON Specialists...am with them ATM...£600 per year, but should drop when renewal comes up in dec.

Am 47, with 10 years no claims, clean licence etc etc.

@Matt, i will give swinton a bell tomorrow, but ive a sneaking suspicion that ive phoned them before and they dont cover northern ireland drivers grrrrr!!

But i will try them again tomorrow, just incase im imagining things lol

Just really doing my head in as im so so close to owning an fd2, if i could only get the insurance side of things resolved,

Might be a silly question but have you asked lowrider who he is insured through at the moment? might be able to point you in the right direction. also a syou are in northern ireland and most mainstream insurance companies look upon you infavourably for some reason why not try some of your local insurance brokers? I knwo when i was younger they were able to give me better quotes than going to the bigger companies.

I'm with elephant at the moment paying £600. 28, 3 years no claims so no reason for your insurance to be that high. Have you tried adding your mum as a named driver? usually brings it down a good bit.

Hope this helps dude.

@simon....lowrider's with elephant too.

Well i phoned elephant today and after alot of haggling i got them to drop down to £3100 which i think is probably the best price im going to get off them. Its still a bloody joke though.

Tried another few companies but they just wont touch northern ireland drivers which again is a pain in the ass.

So i might just have to bite the bullet and go with elephant fs

what about adrian flux, im 39 with full ncd with no penalty points and i am only £435 with my other half on as a named driver and she is 31.

Passion doesn't have a limit sometimes.... I feel you moglie! The total cost of buying my FD2 was not at all neglible either....

there is no way in this world that I would pay £3k to insure a car.. Never.

I would if I was a lotto winner and it was to insure my Enzo - on a Honda civic though? not a hope in hell.

Are you sure that you can even insure the wheels of an Enzo with such an amount :nahnah: :nahnah: .
Actually that's why moglie is asking here to find a cheaper solution....

I'm with elephant and am only a year older than you and live in a dodgy Manc postcode.

The quote they've given you seems to be especially high though.

Have you tried Brentacre? A few friends have used them on performance cars and have said they're really competitive with pricing.

21, 2 years NCB, licence for 4 years it would be almost 2000 for me, but i'd be adding both my parents as named drivers onto the policy which brings it down to £1000, and plus it lets my dad use it!
