My friend has one, hence the thread. He bought it last year and brought it up. More or less standard at the time other than the Carbonio intake he'd just bought and fitted. We took it out back to back with mine as it had been a while since he'd been in the FD2. He also had 'plans' for it, so wanted me to drive it standard first.
I have to say, it's a nice place to be. Bit of a cliche but you sink into the leather nicely, i love the flat bottomed wheel and the driving position felt pretty good once I'd faffed about a bit. Everything just feels nicely put together too, it's no high end luxury model, but it's well loaded with toys and has an air of quality about it. We headed out onto my usual back road run of about 10 miles and the car felt good. Power was effortless, foot goes down and quietly you accelerate away. It wasn't anything massively exciting, but still felt quick and when you glanced at the speedo, you see how quickly it picks up. We then took mine out and he couldn't believe how hard it was again lol Did the same run, albeit with a lot less comfort and a lot more noise. Have to say, the Civic still felt quicker and definitely handled better.
So, he's just been back for round two last weekend. The car now has new downpipes and race cats, new exhaust and Stage 2 remap. Just listening to it pull up, it sounded 100% better, so much meatier but not OTT. It's his wifes daily driver and his outlet for the modding addiction. lol He needs to keep things nicely balanced as the supercharged, flamespitting Toda'd EP3 he had before was not her cup of tea. lol
Off we went, out of my place on the same old route, up came the NSL sign and I planted it in third.....
"F**K MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" was all I could say for the first few minutes along with my hysterics. The car is transformed. It spins up and takes off so goddamn quick now you have to be paying serious attention to what you're doing. I couldn't stop grinning the whole way and when we got back near my house after about 10 odd miles, I asked if we could go round again.
lol It pulls so hard now compared to before, change gear and it keeps pulling and pulling. Effortlessly quick, with a nice bit of exhaust rasp. I have to say I love it.
It's been a very long time since I've owned a turbo car, my Phase 2 RS Turbo back in the 90s lol Things have moved on haven't they in modern, small, low pressure turbo cars? I'm sure a bit of old school turbo lag wouldn't go amiss and some more whooshing from under the bonnet. lol
It's been mapped to 300bhp / 360 lb/ft so it's a pretty evil Golf now. Mine still has the edge in the handling dept. though, i has so much more confidence in cornering in mine. However I can't say I disliked the pliant ride in the Golf either. After a new clutch, lol handling mods are next on the agenda. Just to rub it in, Phil looked over at the end of the second run and said "Not bad, we're still averaging about 35mpg too" lol I think it's cost just shy of £2k all in for all the bits and the remap. Could you get a similar setup and increase for the FD2 for the same money...? I wish....
Bastard.
